Mt Thorley Warkworth Mine New Workshop Building | QClad | Showcasing Roofing, Cladding & Acoustic Successes

QClad was engaged by FCS to complete works at the Mt Thorley Warkworth mine. The works included over 8000m² of roofing and cladding works to the new Workshop Building. Works were successfully completed on time and on budget with works wrapping up before the Christmas break.

QClad were engaged by long-time client Laing O’Rourke to carry out the removal and replacement of fire rated cladding materials to the M&A Apartment Tower in Fortitude Valley, Brisbane. The methodology included specialised access systems and techniques including swing stages, rope access technician’s, and a complex public protection system. The project was successfully completed on time and on budget.

QClad were engaged by BGC Construction to carry out the installation of the acoustic linings to the roof, walls and air plenums to the new Perth Arena. The project consisted of approximately 28,000 square meters of Durra panel including all supporting framework and architectural finishes. QClad relocated senior management, supervisory staff and a core crew of highly skilled workers from Brisbane to Perth to ensure the builder was getting a first class service on this land mark project.

Mueller College engaged PPACS to build and manage their new Exhibition Hall in Rothwell, just north of Brisbane. QClad were awarded the roofing and ceiling portion of the project which included the design, supply and installation of the Ortech acoustic ceiling system, Colorbond roofing and all associated rainwater goods. The project called for a high level of acoustic performance as well as the highest level of finish to satisfy the client’s stringent requirements. QClad successfully fulfilled all of its obligations and exceeded all time and safety milestones. The successful outcome of this project once again reflects the flexibility within the company, that whilst it can service the mining and industrial sectors, it can also deliver high quality projects such as Mueller College. This project is just one of the many similar projects completed by QClad in the educational system throughout Queensland.

The re-development of the existing Brisbane RNA show grounds was a landmark project for Lend Lease. QClad were engaged here to design, shop detail and install the acoustic ceilings to the main hall.

Complete ceiling panels of approximately 100 square meters were constructed at ground level and hoisted into position. The finished inner face of the ceiling was an acoustic pattern designed to manage the high level of reverberation control required within the hall.

The Work Element 02 Package includes Roofing and Acoustic Panel Installation for Aircraft Hangars and associated structures totalling approximately 20,000m2. QClad used a preassembly method for the panels with boards and steel assembled on ground before being lifted into position via crane. This method reduces the amount of working at heights required and also allows for increased efficiency due to increased on ground construction.

In addition to this, QClad successfully designed, manufactured and implemented a new sliding rooftop safety rail system for the project which resulted in increased safety and production for the install. The managing contractor Lendlease were suitably impressed with the system and awarded QClad with a Safety Innovation Award for the Project. Unfortunately, photos of the project are not available to display due to security restrictions of the RAAF Base

When Monadelphous engaged QClad to carry out the sheeting of its overland conveyor system in Ulan West, the primary goal was the methodology to ensure a smooth flowing system that would expedite the works in a safe and timely manner.

QClad designed and engineered a travelling guardrail system which enabled its work crew to move in a safe and continuous motion down the three kilometre line.

QClad have a long successful background in servicing the Central Queensland coal fields and Rio Tinto is just one of their many clients. Thomas & Coffey were the principle contractors on the Clermont Expansion Project and together with QClad, successfully handed over the new six bay heavy vehicle workshop on budget and on time.

To complete the coal load out facility, a 13 kilometre overland conveyor was also sheeted by QClad within a three week time window exceeding all expectations of both the builder and client. Once again, another testimonial to the company’s commitment in the support of its customer and commercial needs.

QClad approached this project with change in mind. The project required a high level of acoustic treatment and the conventional build-up process was going to negatively impact timelines and budgets. 

We developed and recommended a simplified, panelised system allowing the roof and wall areas to be built at ground level before being hoisted into their final position. This revolutionary process significantly reduced both the time required for construction, as well as the difficulties related to working at heights.

The key value for Laing O’Rourke was less time and money spent managing contractors’ on-site, simplified project management through less congestion at the workface and the ability to get subsequent trades kicked off significantly faster.

The Yandi Sustaining Plant Project contained 1000m² of Colorbond Ultra Sheeting including flashing, Roller Doors, PA Doors and Rainwater Goods. QClad successfully completed the project safely, on time and on budget.

QClad were contracted by Walz to complete cladding works for the Stockpile Cover and several ancillary buildings on the GEMCO Manganese mine in Groote Eyelandt, Northern Territory. Works included installation of 6500m² of Colorbond sheeting plus gutters, downpipes and all associated flashings across the seven structures.

The remote location, minimal barge delivery windows and limited timeframe for works all added to what was a logistically challenging project. Through careful preplanning and a strong performance from site staff, QClad successfully completed the works safely, on program and to the high-quality standards QClad is renowned for.

Pleased with the commitment to safe work, Sedgman presented QClad's site staff with a project safety award for the safe and professional manner in which workers approached the job and the way methodology changes were handled and adapted safely throughout the project.

The Mount Pleasant Mine Project involved the Roofing & Cladding to five large buildings and several Conveyor Covers. The works were a success and are another example of QClad's skills and experience being applied in the Resources Sector.

The WAMBO Mine Project began amidst the COVID pandemic with travel restrictions and lockdowns affecting the industry. QClad were able to call upon its NSW-based workers to ensure works were able to continue without a hiccup.

Construction of the new Central Workshop for the RTAY Project in Yarwun, QLD was successfully completed in the first half of 2022. To add another dimension to the project, construction took place during QLD’s early 2022 COVID-19 outbreak period which caused several logistic & travel issues. QClad were able to work with the client to adapt to the new regulations and ensure the project was able to continue without significant delay.

Walz engaged QClad to deliver the Roofing & Cladding works for the Boyne Smelters Stockpile Shed which consisted of approx. 4600m² of steep pitched roofing and accompanying wall cladding. QClad were able to utilise our expertise in specialist heights access to safely complete the project.

QClad continued its relationship with Walz with the Installation of the Saraji Mine Workshop Upgrade. The project included an extension to the existing workshop with approx. 4500m² of new roofing & wall cladding as well as added ventilation and rainwater goods.

QClad was engaged to Install Roofing, Cladding & Roof Vents to the BPF Building as part of the Bengalla Tailing Circuit Upgrade Project. QClad were able to ramp up staffing to complete this project in parallel with the nearby Mt Thorley Project, to ensure both projects could be completed on program by year’s end.

Thiess-United Group contracted QClad to carry out the supply and installation of insulated roofing panels to the new train stations located at Beerburrum and Elimbah.

The main challenge here was the fact that both these stations were being constructed alongside operational train lines. The coordination between the builder, Queensland Rail and QClad had to be accurate and consistent to ensure the health and safety of all employees as well as maintaining a timely travel schedule for the local train service.

QClad were engaged by Thiess to complete the Roofing and Cladding package for Stations on the new Moreton Bay Rail Link Project. The package required several crews working concurrently to complete the seven new stations which included six overpasses, an additional Stabling Yard and approximately 6000m2 of Askin Insulated Panels.

Laing O’Rourke engaged QClad to deliver Roofing and Cladding Works as part of Bombardier's New Generation Rolling Stock Project in Wulkuraka, SE QLD.

In addition to the 18,000m2 of Kingspan Insulated Panel, QClad installed a range of louvres, ridge vents and stainless steel rainwater goods throughout the various train housing and maintenance buildings on the project. Impressed with the finished product, Laing O’Rourke awarded QClad a Project Quality Award in recognition of the high quality level of finish and attention to detail produced by the team.

The Coomera Train Station ReRoof project included the replacement of a section of the Station Platform Canopy with both standard Colorbond Sheeting and also curved sheeting which was required to be shaped onsite.

QClad was able to draw on its experience of previous Rail Projects to develop a methodology with head contractor APGC and safely achieve full installation of the works in a single shutdown weekend.

The Mountain Creek State High School Project consisted of roofing, cladding, soffits, flashings & rainwater goods to the main school building along with various associated walkways. The client had a very particular expectation as to the final finish and the outcome was a success.

QClad has worked with APGC to complete 2x projects for Damascus Barracks in recent years - the restoration of Buildings B025 and B004. The projects involved the re-roofing & cladding of the Heritage listed Defence Force Facility in Pinkenba Brisbane. Due to the Heritage listing of the buildings, a significant level of care and planning was required for the projects including extensive consultation with stakeholders, head contractor APGC and suppliers to ensure the products installed met both the design intent and also the specific aesthetic needs and Heritage requirements for the structure.

Several nonstandard products were required to match the existing heritage materials of the building including custom folded sheeting produced using ZINCFORM Colorbond steel to match the old profile no longer used by modern roll formers while also meeting the modern requirements for quality and warranty purposes. Building B025 included the replacement of a ridge vent along the length of the main roof while Building B004 also required a little extra with a custom curved ridge (also produced from the custom folded sheeting profile) installed along its length.

QClad was proud to have successfully delivered the Damascus Barracks Project together with APGC & Bluescope Steel to restore the Barracks to its former glory and ensure this Heritage listed piece of Australian history lives on for many years to come.

QClad was excited by the challenge to work with BSL for the multistage VDC Re-Roof Project. Due to the age and brittle nature of the sheets, the VDC Building roof was determined to be unsafe to access by foot which eliminated traditional access methods for the works. QClad were able to develop an alternative access plan which utilised a purpose-built custom fabricated access platform that could be craned into position and moved along the building in stages.

The platform concept was imagined in the QClad office by the tender team and senior site staff before a third-party engineering team was engaged to complete a detailed, certified engineering design. The platform was fabricated and a test assembly was completed offsite to ensure smooth operation once reaching site.

The plan proved successful with the platform enabling safe access for workers atop the roof to remove sheets before workers could remove purlins via EWP from below. The process was used to systematically work along the replacement area of the roof and safely complete works. BSL and Rio Tinto were both pleased with the successful and safe outcomes for the project with QClad being awarded repeat work for the following stages set to begin in 2024.

QClad is currently engaged on the QRSAUP Project to deliver the Roofing and Cladding Packages for four Brisbane Rail Stations – Banyo, Buranda, Morningside & Lindum. The works includes the installation of 4x new accessible overpasses (one at each station) as well as new platform canopies, station buildings and associated structures at each station.

Planning & Logistics has been critical on this project with large portions of work required to be installed during rail shutdown periods. Limited site laydown space and significant prefabrication requirements have also added to the challenge with QClad working closely with Laing O’Rourke and other trades to overcome restrictions.

QClad have a longstanding relationship with Downer Rail on the Maryborough site. Since 2012 we’ve been working on various projects providing quality roofing & cladding service post asbestos removal.


We’ve also been engaged directly providing product inspection reports, additional ventilation systems & clear light cladding.
